Why this Trust?
This trust is being created to honour Shanta Kaul’s life, values, and legacy — a woman of the Valley who lived a life of deep impact. She was born and raised in Kashmir, worked here with passion and commitment, became a beloved social and cultural icon, and raised her family here. Though she had to leave the Valley under difficult circumstances, this was always her “karam-bhoomi” — the land of her work, spirit, and roots. It feels only right that her legacy lives on in the place she gave so much to.

OUR MISSION
The Aapa Jaan Shanta Kaul Memorial Trust will work to remove financial obstacles to higher education for bright, deserving young women from the outer reaches of the Valley. And in doing so, further Shanta Kaul’s values and legacy.

Shanta Kaul was also an incredible role model to everyone whose life she touched. Research shows that visible, women, role models can play a vital role in powering young women's aspirations and growth. Mentoring and providing access to role models is another means through which the Trust hopes to better the lives of women of the Valley.
